You do not need AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to boot Win98 (when correctly installed.) So advise your father to rename both C:\ REN AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC.OLD C:\ REN CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.OLD and reboot via Ctl Alt Del (all 3 keys together.)
